Legislative Branch Rubric
I created this rubric for my assessment class this semester. This was the first rubric I have ever made so doing this project made me realized just how important rubrics can be if they are used effectively in assessment. I first designed a small project for a classmate to do and gave them the rubric to follow as they completed the project. I was then critiqued on my ability to create a useful and accurate rubric by my teacher and classmate who completed the project. I needed to make specific criteria for how the project would be graded so that students would know exactly what is expected of them, and as a teacher, I could grade the project in a subjective way.
I found that as first, I was not being specific enough with my wording. I was not specific as to how long each response would need to be and I also did not specify how big the poster should be. These were little things that I now know I need to include in my rubrics so that students do not become confused and discouraged when they are working on the project. Directions should be very concise and to the point, so that the student knows exactly what to include, and the teacher knows exactly what they are looking for and grading. I left too much room for judgement in this rubric before I modified it. Students were able to hand in many different types of posters and projects and under my rubric guidelines, they would have been accepted. This meant that I needed to make my rubric more specific in order to make it more subjective for grading.
